This week’s annual Gala sparked interest and inspired people to talk about the positives of aging. Thanks to our amazing Fashion icon, role model, innovator and philanthropist, and Silver Star honoree Fern Mallis we were able to highlight that life can still be pretty great after the age of 60.

Last night, we held our annual Gala at the Mandarin Oriental to raise funds to fight isolation among aging New Yorkers with a sense of love and belonging. Our inaugural Silver and White Night honored fashion icon, role model, innovator, and philanthropist Fern Mallis.

In a recent article for Forbes, Next Avenue Contributor and Chairman and Co-Founder of Home Instead Senior Care, Paul Hogan discusses the lack of corporate funding to senior services. Hogan points out that, “less than 1% of the funds go to causes related to aging.”

We were recently mentioned in a blog post by the Diverse Elders Coalition about the mental and physical effects of loneliness on older adults. The article highlights our volunteer partners, The Harmony Exchange. The photo featured in the piece is a picture of volunteers spending time with seniors at our Roosevelt Island Senior Center. According to a recent study by National Poll on Healthy Aging, one third of seniors say they are lonely. Feeling isolated affects memory, mental and physical health. Thanks to a generous donation from New York Community Trust, we are connecting Roosevelt Island homebound seniors with their neighbors, friends, and family.

Our Associate Executive Director and Director/ Curator of the Carter Burden Gallery, Marlena Vaccaro was interviewed by WFUV’s Alexandra Parker. The two spoke about ageism in the arts, and how important our Carter Burden Gallery is to New York City artists ages 60 and up.
